the story of the moonkettle

Can we make people’s everyday moments of calm into more memorable moments through tools? This is where the MoonKettle’s design journey began.

Gen Terao, Founder

bittersweet

It is a drink that is sweet and bitter compared to water. The first sip is very hot, and its distinctive astringent aroma spreads to the nose. It is said that “tea” originated in China, where it was originally drunk as a medicine for health. I remember my grandmother telling me that tea was good for the body. At the time, I wondered if it was true. I wondered if it was true at the time. Looking back, my memories of tea are endless. Mugi-cha (barley tea) with sugar during summer vacation. Green tea in the staff room. The iced tea I drank at the McDonald’s where I met up with my adolescent. The te con leche we met in the Spanish countryside, and so on. It was there for serious discussions, and it was also an essential part of an elegant breakfast.

let’s take a moment to decompress

Why has tea appeared in so many aspects of my life, and why is this beverage so beloved by mankind? It seems strange when you think about it. Over the years, mankind has become familiar with its taste and aroma and realized that it has more of a soothing effect than a medicine. Perhaps that is why. When people talked to others about something important, there was often tea there. We enjoy tea on a daily basis. Let’s calm down a little. Let’s take a break. People make tea for a change of pace or to calm their minds. This is how the MoonKettle’s design journey began.

yao guan

The color, shape, size, and weight of a utensil change the actions, gestures, and speed with which a person uses it. In other words, tools have the power to change people’s feelings and the atmosphere of a place. In this way, the tea ceremony was a time when people not only made the utensils, but also created everything from the garden to the tea room, and mastered the art of serving tea in order to enjoy a wonderful moment. We at BALMUDA are a modern-day toolmaker. We wanted to design tools for the best moments. The inspiration for this project came from the yao guan, an ancient Chinese tea kettle that was originally used to boil herbal medicines, but has since been transformed into a simple tool for boiling water, something we Japanese are also familiar with.

uguisu (japanese nightingale)

We pursued an elegant silhouette while basing the design on the traditional “yakkan” (medicine kettle). The large handle, which is also the origin of the name, was inspired by an iron kettle. The MoonKettle has become a much lovelier and more iconic tool than we had originally thought. The unique and beautiful sound during operation is intended to soothe the time until the water is ready. The warm light, like that of a stove, is also a distinctive feature. These may be devices unique to modern tools. The product name “Uguisu Kettle” was adopted during the course of its development, and a wonderful idea was adopted to make the sound of the completion of heating water the cry of a Japanese bush warbler! This was a great idea. However, when we actually tried it out, we found that the sound of the kettle was not so good. But when we actually tried it, we found that having a nightingale chirp every time the water boils was too tasteful. It was rejected.

tea time

The days are constantly busy. It is like a wave, leaving something behind or not. Even if we try our best to see something, time passes us by as we are distracted by the colorful variety of colors in front of us. So, let’s have a cup of tea. Let’s have a cup of tea. Turn off the TV and phone. Let’s talk together with the person in front of us.
